General Information for Travel to Tanzania
LANGUAGE
English is widely spoken but a few words of Swahili can be useful and will be appreciated greatly by locals.
TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
When travelling, please remember to keep all your travel documents organized for easier reference. This includes your international flight tickets, Domestic flight tickets (if any), passports, tour itinerary, important contact numbers of your ground handler and hotels where you will be staying at.
VISAS
All matters related to visa, contact your local Tanzanian Embassy for the latest information.
For citizens who require to pay for visas on arrival, please note that only cash is accepted at all airports and borders, so make sure to carry enough cash to avoid any inconveniences.
Please be advised of the new visa process in Tanzania.
With immediate effect Kilimanjaro airport has changed the process of issuing visas on arrival. Clients arriving in Kilimanjaro without a visa now need to complete the following process:
• Queue for a Government Control Number
• Pay for the visa at the bank, which is located outside of the arrivals hall
• Go back into the arrivals hall and queue for Immigration to issue the visa
These sudden changes at Kilimanjaro have resulted in the visa on arrival process taking in excess of two hours, so we recommend that those who still have time before they travel apply for their Tanzania visa online at www.immigration.go.tz. The online process can take up to 2 – 3 weeks. (https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/).
CURRENCY
The local currency for Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling.
Major currencies like US Dollar, Pounds & Euros are easily exchanged in (banks) large towns. US Dollars are mostly preferred and can be used to pay any personal expenses that are not included in your tour. US Dollars printed prior to Year 2006 will not be accepted in Tanzania.
American Express, Visa, and MasterCard are all widely recognized credit cards and are accepted at major hotels, lodges, shops, restaurants & travel agents. When making payments with Credit Cards expect to pay surcharges of up to 3% to 7% for all purchases.
ATM machines are available in cities and some towns. Please contact your bank in advance to determine whether you will be able to use your card while in Tanzania.
HEALTH
Tanzania is located in a tropical climatic region with different bacteria, flora, and fauna than most visitors are accustomed to, so it is advisable to take a few health precautions when travelling so as to make sure that your trip goes as comfortably and smoothly as possible.
CLIMATE
Tanzania is a year-round destination, as most frequently the climate features warm, bright days and cool nights. Daytime temperatures throughout the year typically range from 15.5 to 35 degrees Celsius. Evening temperatures can be cooler, ranging from 10 to 15.5 degrees Celsius. The coastal strip is hot and humid all year round. Temperatures on Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru drop to below freezing
The rainy seasons are March to May (“long rains”) and October to December (“short rains”). Even during the rains, the weather can be pleasant with rain occurring in the early morning and late afternoon or evenings.
CLOTHING/DRESS CODE
Pack lightweight, comfortable, casual and semi-casual and washable clothes including a sweater for early morning game drives and night time at the lodges/camps which can be cold especially in the Ngorongoro Crater Rim. Please note that bright colors are not suitable when doing game drives.
Shorts for women are acceptable (but not too short!). Women should carry a wrap to cover legs in the villages and towns as revealing clothes can cause offence, especially in Zanzibar and Moslem areas. On the beach and within the confines of beach hotels normal swimwear is acceptable (but not nudity).
For climbing on Kilimanjaro or Meru, take thermal underwear, light layers, sweater, rain jacket, good socks and sturdy boots.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Photographic supplies may be found in the hotel gift shops during the safari; however, the selection is limited and often sold at an elevated price. Memory Cards for digital cameras may not be in stock, especially away from the urban areas. All safari vehicles are fitted with roof hatches for unobstructed viewing of wildlife. However, one may only get out of the vehicle to take photographs at designated points during the game drives. Extra camera batteries are essential. Keep your camera in a dust-proof case to protect it from dust.
Taking photographs at airports, near police or military bases, of policemen, the President or government ministers and/or their respective entourages, the State House, state lodges or soldiers is STRICTLY prohibited. It is courteous to ask permission before photographing local people.
COMMUNICATION
Country Code for Tanzania is +255
The mobile network is good and local SIM cards and Airtime cards are available for purchase. This will eliminate the cost on incoming calls and it will reduce significantly the cost on outgoing calls.
Some local mobile operators have “roaming” agreements with most operators abroad, however, we recommend that you contact your cell phone carrier to determine limitations and services that exist for the areas you will be visiting.
Internet is available at major towns & cities. Some lodges/camps do have WIFI internet facilities as well. However, this service is not guaranteed especially in the parks due to remoteness.
TIME
Tanzania is 3 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
ELECTRICITY
The electrical current is 220-240 Volts. Any appliances that do not meet this standard need to be used with an electric converter. The socket configurations vary between the two and three pronged varieties so ensure to bring the entire set of adapters.
TIPPING
Tipping is customary in Tanzania, if you are pleased with the service. In the hotel, tip boxes are located near the reception desk and tips left in the boxes are distributed equally to all hotel staff, including those often not seen by guests. Having some small denomination bank notes is useful for tipping purposes. For the local driver guides are normally tipped on last day of safari and normally is recommended at least from USD 10-20 per person per day.
PARK RULES & REGULATIONS
Upon entering the parks, there are a number of rules and regulations posted at entry gates. We request all guests to strictly follow them and protect the wildlife and natural resources. Game viewing is the most essential part of the African Safari experience, it is very important to avoid interference or harmful contact with animals in their habitat.
