Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Machame Gate (1,640 meters) to Machame Camp (2,835 meters)
- Altitude Gain: 1,195 meters
- Climb Duration: 5-7 hours
- Description: Start your journey at Machame Gate, where you’ll register and begin the hike. The trail passes through lush rainforest, and you’ll gradually ascend to Machame Camp for your first overnight stay.
Day 2: Machame Camp (2,835 meters) to Shira Camp (3,750 meters)
- Altitude Gain: 915 meters
- Climb Duration: 4-6 hours
- Description: Leave the rainforest behind as you ascend through moorland. The landscape becomes more sparse, and you’ll reach Shira Camp located on the Shira Plateau, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks.
Day 3: Shira Camp (3,750 meters) to Barranco Camp (3,900 meters) via Lava Tower (4,600 meters)
- Altitude Gain/Loss: +850 meters (to Lava Tower) / -700 meters (to Barranco Camp)
- Climb Duration: 6-7 hours
- Description: Today involves a challenging ascent to Lava Tower, where you’ll experience higher altitude and then descend to Barranco Camp. This helps with acclimatization and offers breathtaking views of the Barranco Wall.
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,900 meters) to Karanga Camp (4,035 meters)
- Altitude Gain: 135 meters
- Climb Duration: 4-5 hours
- Description: Navigate the iconic Barranco Wall, a steep scramble. Afterward, the trail continues across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, nestled beneath the southern ice fields of Kilimanjaro.
Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035 meters) to Barafu Camp (4,680 meters)
- Altitude Gain: 645 meters
- Climb Duration: 3-4 hours
- Description: Ascend to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. The terrain becomes rocky and barren as you climb higher, and you’ll prepare for the summit push.
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,680 meters) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) and descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters)
- Altitude Gain: 1,215 meters (to Uhuru Peak) / -2,795 meters (to Mweka Camp)
- Climb Duration: 7-8 hours to Uhuru Peak, 6-8 hours descent to Mweka Camp
- Description: Start the summit attempt in the early hours of the morning to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, in time for sunrise. Descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for the night.
Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100 meters) to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters)
- Altitude Loss: -1,460 meters
- Descent Duration: 3-4 hours
- Description: Descend through the lush rainforest, reflecting on your achievement as you make your way to Mweka Gate. Here, you’ll receive your summit certificates before transferring back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
